Proprio’s flagship product, Paradigm, is the first spine surgical navigation platform to utilize light field imaging technology fused with AI to help surgeons be more precise, while exponentially increasing surgical accuracy and efficiency. Amidst the increasing adoption of AI in post-operative and diagnostic domains, only a handful of medical technology companies have ventured into the realm of utilizing AI’s intraoperatively.

Human anatomy, with its complexity and dynamism, is one of the richest and most valuable data sets in the world. Proprio was born out of the recognition that, today, surgeons rely on a mix of old-school tools (like X-Rays and CT scans) to gain insight into this data set. Rather than focus on incremental, lower-risk innovations to existing modalities, Proprio has developed Paradigm to capture unprecedented surgical data and seamlessly bring it to the surgeon, in a meaningful way, for real-time clinical decision making.

The Paradigm system is the first to use light field technology in spine surgery for this use case. By capturing high-definition multimodal intraoperative images and fusing that data with preoperative scans, surgeons are able to “see” the surgical field in a completely new way. Using this technology, surgeons will no longer need to rely on a mix of time consuming legacy tools, that all pull attention away from the patient and reduce accuracy in the process.

Benefits of the system include: reduction in radiation and accelerated workflow by removing the need for high-radiation intraoperative scans throughout the procedure, fast registration that can be completed in seconds rather than minutes, and continuous data capture at approximately 250GB of data captured per hour.

This year, Proprio received FDA 510(k) clearance for Paradigm and completed a successful $43 million Series B funding round that will boost commercialization efforts. In early Fall 2023, Proprio is anticipating its first-in-human use of Paradigm and plans to deploy its system into strategic operating rooms across the country.
