Riva Health is a digital cardiology platform that aims to redefine cardiovascular healthcare using smartphone technology. The project is spearheaded by Dag Kittlaus, co-founder of Siri and Viv, and Tuhin Sinha, Ph.D., co-founder of the University of California, San Francisco’s Health eHeart Study. Riva's technology employs signal processing and machine learning to determine features in the pulse waveform that correlate with blood pressure. Users simply place their index finger over the camera on the back of their smartphone. Light from the camera flash illuminates blood vessels in the fingertip, and the camera captures intensity changes as blood flows through with each heartbeat. The project's goal is to provide a comprehensive, equitable, and accessible way for patients to manage hypertension and heart disease. The idea is to turn smartphones into instant medical devices, enabling accurate blood pressure measurement without dedicated hardware. Riva Health aims to improve compliance and data quality by providing a convenient and comfortable alternative to traditional blood pressure cuffs. The data collected would then be used to help patients and healthcare providers manage blood pressure more effectively, including improving medication adherence and guiding lifestyle modifications.
