As the discharge of nuclear wastewater and rising sea levels become increasingly pronounced, numerous coastal cities are confronting significant existential challenges. Jakarta, recognized as the first city in the world that may face submersion, exemplifies how nuclear contamination, exacerbated by the climate crisis, serves as a microcosm for future global urban environments—characterized by high population density, ecological vulnerability, and constrained resources. In response to this pressing issue, WaterBubble is dedicated to offering an innovative mode of survival for future urban areas through its advanced modular design and intelligent ecological management system.
The primary concept behind WaterBubble is to establish a living environment anchored in underwater ecosystems, thereby providing multi-tiered ecological protection and resource optimization for urban settings. The intelligent management system employs digital twin technology to monitor the dispersion of nuclear pollutants and fluctuations in water quality in real time. Concurrently, it presents essential information such as water quality, air quality, and the efficacy of nuclear wastewater purification in real time, while dynamically adjusting resource allocation through big data analytics and artificial intelligence to optimize the utilization of limited resources. Furthermore, it is equipped with an interactive early warning system capable of responding to emergencies promptly, thereby ensuring the safety of residents and the integrity of the ecological environment.
From a design perspective, the modular structures draw inspiration from the cellular architecture found in nature and the modularity of Lego construction blocks, offering flexible adaptability and replicability. This results in a standardized solution that can be rapidly deployed across various coastal cities globally. Additionally, the bubble-like form of the buildings, inspired by natural bubble structures, features gentle curves and straightforward geometric shapes. This design not only enhances the stability of the underwater architecture but also symbolizes the conception and continuity of life, thereby emphasizing the theme of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature.
